Founded in 1968, North Myrtle Beach is known for its beautiful beaches and rustic beach cottages. While it is a tourist destination, much of the area also offers residents quiet, secluded retreats. The city was formed when four communities, Windy Hill, Crescent Beach, Ocean Driver and Cherry Grove were incorporated.

North Myrtle Beach offers residents and visitors nine miles of beaches, some quiet and secluded, others with bustling social scenes. There are also 120 golf fairways that boast some of the best playing in the country and bring in players from all over the world. Those wanting to spend time on the water can enjoy both onshore and offshore fishing, boating excursions, and casino and riverboat cruises like that of the Barefoot Princess. There is one university within a 30 mile drive of North Myrtle Beach and two junior colleges. North Myrtle Beach schools are located in the neighboring city of Little River and include a primary, elementary, intermediate, middle and high school. The Grand Strand Medical Center serves North Myrtle Beach residents but is located on 809 82nd Parkway in Myrtle Beach. There is an international airport in Myrtle Beach and a regional airport called the Grand Strand Airport in North Myrtle Beach. The city also includes taxis and limousines, but does not currently have a bus system in place. Most residents commute to work via one of the highways that are easily accessible from the city, or they bike or walk if they work locally.
