Home Safety Tips for Seniors

by The Jerry Pinkas Team

Staying safe in your home is important for residents of any age, but those over 60 have additional needs when it comes to safety. Below are five home safety tips for seniors to help older Myrtle Beach residents can live safely in their own homes for years to come:

  1. Install smoke detectors and have a fire extinguisher on each floor. This is important for homeowners of any age, but those over 60 tend to have a more difficult time moving quickly. In a fire, when seconds count, this can be a problem. Make sure that you have ample time to get out of your house safely, if necessary, by having a smoke detector near your bedroom and on each floor. Make sure that you test all smoke detectors annually, as recommended by the US Consumer Protection Agency.
  2. Never smoke in bed. A greater percentage of older Americans smoke than those under 40 and, more people die in smoking fires than any other cause of home fire, according to The Hartford Insurance Company. Avoid this situation entirely by never even bringing a cigarette into your bedroom.
  3. Illuminate your home well. One of the most important home safety tips for seniors is to keep your home well lit. As we age, our eyesight tends to lessen. Counter this by making sure that your steps and your kitchen work areas are well-lighted. Using non-glare bulbs will also help you to see better. Get in the habit of leaving a light on in the bathroom at night so you can see if you get up during the night.
  4. Avoid or tack down area and throw rugs. Falls are one of the most common home accidents involving older Americans. In fact, one out of three Americans over age 65 falls each year, according to the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. It's an issue any list of home safety tips for seniors needs to address. Don't let your floor coverings be a hazard. Keep those rugs in place by using special, non-skip rug backing or just use double-sided tape. For those corners of larger rugs that always seem to curl up, consider tacking them down with small finishing nails.
  5. Outfit your bathtub for safety. The bath is another problem area for older Americans. Make sure your bath is hazard-free by using a non-slip mat in the bottom of the tub. Also, consider turning down your water heater from the standard 120 degrees to a safer (and more energy-efficient) 90 to 100 degrees. If mobility is an issue, a safety bar can make getting in and out of the tub much easier and safer.

Myrtle Beach Real Estate Listing Alerts

by The Jerry Pinkas Team

Imagine shopping for your dream Myrtle Beach home, condo or property from the privacy of your own office or living room.  Today's technology makes it easy to narrow down your real estate search without ever going outside. No more tromping through the snow or battling traffic to get to unfamiliar neighborhoods. Myrtle Beach real estate listing alerts make it as easy as opening your email box.

How Real Estate Email Alerts Work

When you sign up for Myrtle Beach real estate alerts, you’ll answer several questions about the type of property you're looking for. We'll ask things like what areas you’d like to live in, how many bedrooms, bathrooms, and, of course, what price. Your initial email alert from us will include all properties on the market that meet your criteria. Then, each day, we'll send you any new listings that fall within your parameters.

The information you get on each property will include the specifics about the house (location, number of bedrooms, size, features) as well as photos of the exterior and interior. Some listings also include a virtual (video) tour that allows you to "walk" through the property right from your computer.

Benefits of Using Myrtle Beach Real Estate Listing Alerts

Not only does using email listing alerts save you the time, energy and money necessary to visit each property in person, but email alerts insure that you don't miss that perfect property just because you or your agent overlooked the listing. Email alerts use a computer program to scan all existing and new listings, so you'll know that you're considering every property that meets your specifications. You'll get information on all properties that fit your guidelines, not just the ones that your agent represents. There's peace of mind knowing that you haven't missed looking at any potential dream home.

Myrtle Beach Vacationers are Potential Homebuyers

by The Jerry Pinkas Team

Have you ever thought about turning that Myrtle Beach vacation into a permanent retreat after you retire? The things you like about the South Carolina coast--the weather, the golfing, the beach--will likely be even more enjoyable if you lived there full-time.

Reasons to Retire in and around Myrtle Beach

The Myrtle Beach area has much to offer retirees. The cost of living is less than in most major east coast cities, yet the Carolina coast is still just a day's drive away from family back home. Myrtle Beach enjoys a temperate coastal climate aided by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream, and the area avoids the extreme cold temperatures of New England and usually escapes the sweltering heat of Florida and the Gulf Coast. Most years, golf enthusiasts can enjoy the links for at least nine or ten months. Try that in Connecticut.

Myrtle Beach has 60 area beaches from which to choose. In addition, the city's boardwalk was recently named one of the top 10 boardwalks by "National Geographic" magazine. Myrtle Beach vacationers who decide to make the area their permanent home will also find two state parks--Myrtle Beach State Park and Huntington Beach State Park--as well as the nearby NASCAR Speedway Park.

About Living in Myrtle Beach

Those looking for property in Myrtle Beach will have a wide variety of homes from which to choose. The median home sales price is just under $200,000, with many properties in the $100,000 range.

Finding Myrtle Beach Real Estate

The economic downturn of the last few years has hit Myrtle Beach property values extremely hard. While it's bad news for long-time residents, this trend has made buying area property a bargain for Myrtle Beach vacationers, especially those coming from pricier east coast markets.

If you're ready to make Myrtle Beach your home year-round, let Jerry Pinkas Real Estate Experts show you have easy it is to find your retirement dream home. We'll listen to what you need in a home and scour the area to find a handful of properties that we think will appeal to you. We won't drag you out to homes that are too small, too large or too expensive. What's more: Myrtle Beach vacationers can sign up for email property alerts so that new listings that meet your housing criteria are sent directly to your email inbox at home. What could be easier?
