Toys for Tots – A Brief History

Founder, Major Bill Hendricks

Toys for Tots was founded in 1947 by Major Bill Hendricks, USCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles when Bill’s wife Diane handmade a doll and asked her husband to give it to an organization that helped children in need during the holidays. When Bill discovered an organization of that nature did not exist, his wife suggested he start one. The pilot project collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children in the area, spurring the Marine Corps to adopt Toys for Tots in 1948 and expand it into a nationwide campaign. The original objective remains the same to this day: to “bring the joy of Christmas to America’s needy children”. Because Bill Hendricks was the Director of Public Relations for Warner Brothers Studio, he had access to all of Hollywood, and he used that to his organization’s benefit. He enlisted Walt Disney to design the Toys for Tots logo – still in use today – as well as the first promotional poster. Nat “King” Cole, Peggy Lee and Vic Damone recorded the theme composed by Sammy Fain and Paul Webster. Bob Hope, John Wayne, Doris Day, Lorrie Morgan, and Kenny Rogers are just a handful of the celebrities that have been involved in promoting Toys for Tots.

Since Christmas 1980, Marines only collect new toys. Secondhand toys make children feel like second-class citizens. By refusing to distribute refurbished toys, the Marines hope to deliver a message of optimism that will instill self-esteem, responsibility, and productivity in children. Also, they hope to motivate them to become patriotic citizens and moral community leaders. Refurbished toys, which they accepted until 1980, did not seem to have the same positive affect.

In the late 1980’s, the Marine Corps decided they needed a non-profit charity to be part of the overall national Toys for Tots program.  In August of 1991, the Secretary of Defense authorized the Marine Corps to work with a charity committed to supporting Toys for Tots. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation became an operational organization in September 1991 and has been the backbone for fundraising and other support ever since.

The Foundation provided toys to supplement smaller units that had fewer Marines due to cutbacks in the 80’s and 90’s. It also arranged and paid for the creation, publication, manufacture and distribution of promotion and support materials to coordinators. When the Marine Corps was unable to allow individual and corporate donors to take charitable deductions on their income tax returns, The Foundation stepped in, and it is also able to enter into contracts with corporations to conduct promotions that produce royalties for Toys for Tots. The Foundation also ensures that Toys for Tots operates in compliance with IRS regulations, state laws, and regulations and charitable standards.

In 2001, despite the September 11th attacks, Toys for Tots had its most extensive coverage to date! 388 communities conducted local campaigns covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico and was ranked #289 in the 2001 “Philanthropy 400” – its first time ranking.

Since beginning in 1947, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program has distributed over 452 million toys valued at over $8.5 million, to over 209 million needy children.

Deliver a message of hope, lead a child down the path to productivity.

The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve is to collect new, unwrapped toys during the holidays each year and give these toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community. Their mission has become our mission. Here at Jerry Pinkas Real Estate Experts, we believe every child deserves to receive a shiny new toy on Christmas. No child should be treated like a second-class citizen, which is why Toys for Tots does not accept secondhand gifts.

At Jerry Pinkas Real Estate Experts, we make it our responsibility and commitment to give back to our community both as a team and as individuals. Currently, many of our team members are involved in philanthropic activities in our community.

At Halloween, we scare up funds for Fostering Hope by volunteering at Terror Under the Bridge, a fundraising haunted house attraction in downtown Conway which raises money to provide goods and services to children residing in the foster care system. There are over 500 children within Horry, Georgetown, Marion, and Dillon counties alone that are in foster care due to abuse and neglect.

Jerry Pinkas Real Estate Experts also participates in the Make-A-Wish Foundation, granting wishes for children with life threatening health issues.

Backpack Buddies is another children’s organization we support. Backpack Buddies supplies participating schools with nutritious, child-friendly, self-serve food designed to put in a backpack and feed a child over the weekend.

Helping Hand provides food, medications, housing and other financial help and referral services to people in need in Horry County.

S.O.S. Health Care is a grass roots organization we support. They provide many programs and services to our neighbors in need, helping children with autism, women with cancer, assisting the homeless, and much more!
