There is a sleepy little South Carolina fishing town located about 50 miles west of downtown Myrtle Beach called McClellanville that is home to one of the state’s most beautiful and significant historic gems. On April 15, 1970, the site was declared a National Historic Landmark.  

The actual “house” that is the Hampton Plantation House is truly a sight to behold. It has the mystical power to transport your mind back to the colonial days, when the Georgian-style mansion served as the hub of a lively rice plantation.

Today, the Hampton Plantation goes by several monikers, including the Hampton Plantation House and, when it is serving in its official and historical capacity as one of South Carolina’s state parks, the Hampton Plantation State Historic Site.

The blindingly white paint coating the house’s exterior is so spectacularly well-preserved and maintained that it not only stands out in stark contrast to its dark, tree-shrouded surroundings, but it seems to radiate with its own natural, glowing light.

Perhaps the mansion’s sheer white radiance finally got the best of its last private owner, Archibald Rutledge. A native of McClellanville, South Carolina, Rutledge authored more than 50 books, became the state’s first poet laureate in 1934, and donated the Hampton Plantation House to the people of his home state.

The recent rebound that mortgage rates surveyed by the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, better known as Freddie Mac, enjoyed during the week of Dec. 29, 2011, is, perhaps, a good sign in the short term.

The government-sponsored mortgage company was quick to notify investors that rates are not predicted to ascend anytime soon in 2012.  

The 30-year fixed-rate mortgages remain relatively unstable. They saw an average of 3.95 percent, with a 0.7 point average fluctuation for the same week, according to Freddie Mac, who reminded everyone that the number last week was an all-time low, citing records that date back to 1971, and that 30-year fixed-rate mortgages are still hovering well short of the high 5.05 percent these mortgages saw in February of 2011.

When discussing the 30-year fixed-rate loan, Freddie Mac pointed us all to the newly released results of its Primary Mortgage Market Survey, in which the company shines a microscope on the fact that these 30-year fixed-rate loans have been averaging 4 percent or lower for nine weeks in a row.

• 15-year fixed-rate mortgages: Hitting a 3.24 percent average; up a razor’s edge from last week’s 3.21 percent
• 5-year Treasury-indexed hybrid adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) loans: Hitting a 2.88 percent average; up a smidge from last week’s 2.85 percent (another all-time low mark)
• 1-year Treasury-indexed ARM loans: Hitting a 2.78 percent average; up barely an ant’s belly from the ground it hit last week at 2.77 percent (and yet one more all-time low)  

And Finally...

The brain wizards at Fannie Mae waved their economically charged magic wands at fixed-rate mortgages and delivered a Dec. 20 forecast projecting a 4.0 percent average in 2012 and a 4.3 percent average in 2013. This is a drop of 4.5 percent from last year and 5 percent from ’09.

The Mortgage Bankers Association winds up this week’s countdown with a not-very stunning prediction: 2012 will allegedly see a 4.2 percent average for fixed-rate loans just prior to leaping up into the 4.7 percent range in 2013.

But wait, there’s more! A bonus projection on 30-year fixed-rate loans just came in from the good folks at the National Association of Realtors: 2012 will give us...a rather lackluster hold-steady forecast of good old 4.5 percent.

In anticipation of the candidates a crew of 5 from Team Sandtastic made its way to Myrtle Beach to scuplt a massive Mount Rushmore-esque sculpture outside the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, where the debate will be taking place. According to representatives with the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, the team begain work last Tueday and along the way used more than 525 tons of sand to create three main pieces.

            If you want to see the sand sculptures they are located on Oak Street, across from the convention center. The Debate airs live on Fox News Channel, starting at 9pm tonight (Monday).

There must have been a whiff of smoke in the air near Highway 17 in North Myrtle Beach on that accursed, fateful evening back in December of last year. And if there indeed was a whiff of smoke there on that night, chances are excellent that those who smelled it probably didn’t think much of it.

Folks who either lived nearby or regularly drove past or especially those who regularly stopped in at the Bar-B-Que House at 1561 Highway 17 North in North Myrtle Beach most likely expected to get their nostrils teased by the smoky scent of a good bar-b-que.

The smoke permeating the atmosphere in and around the Bar-B-Que House on Wednesday, Dec. 21, however, was not the mouthwatering, delicious scent of hickory-smoked pork, but instead the smell of owner Scott Rudolph’s North Myrtle Beach Bar-B-Que House restaurant itself engulfed in flames.

"(Running the restaurant takes) blood sweat and tears,” Rudolph told local television station Live 5 News, WMBF, while he was assessing the damage on the Thursday morning after the fire. “We've had a lot of people put their heart and soul (into the North Myrtle Beach Bar-B-Que House)...and the people who worked here were like family. It's horrible, but fortunately no one got hurt."

The restaurant closed at about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Rudolph said, and fire investigators estimate that the blaze ignited at about 10:15 p.m., a fortunate twist of fate for any customers who might have been gnawing on a rib bone, or any of the 15 employees and Rudolph, who might have been working at the time and subsequently been caught in the flames.

Fire investigators said the blaze destroyed a large portion of the Bar-B-Que House’s interior, as well as its roof. 

Horry County Fire and Rescue crews teamed up firefighters from North Myrtle Beach to extinguish the conflagration.

The initial cause of the fire has not been announced.

North Myrtle Beach is a town of about 16,000 year-round residents, nestled along the renowned Grand Strand section of the South Carolina coast about 20 miles north of downtown Myrtle Beach.
